Mini Squad – Mini squad is a new squad we added in 2017 which aims to bridge the gap between stroke correction and squad swimming by easing swimmers into slightly longer lessons and a little bit of “fitness” type swimming. Stroke correction and skill development remain the focus of these lessons.
Junior Squad – It introduces the basics to competitive level swimming. Children will start to learn the competitive starts, turns and finishes while continuing to improve on their strokes through more advanced drills. Some very basic fitness training may be included on some days however the focus is very much skills based. Swimmers in this group range between 7 and 9 years of age. We encourage swimmers to train twice weekly in this group.
Intermediate Squad – Having been introduced to the competitive skills and new drills in the junior squad, swimmers are now taught to use these skills for the purpose of racing. Many of these swimmers are school swim team level swimmers aged usually 9 – 10 years of age and the confidence they take to interschool and intra school competitions is noticeable when compared with their peers. We encourage swimmers to swim 2 – 3 times per week in this group.
Level 1 Squad – This squad builds on the skills learned in the junior and intermediate squad and aims to perfect these.
Level 2 squad – Swimmers in this group range quite widely from very advanced 10 and 11-year-olds to swimmers aged 14 who are less competitive but are too advanced for our more junior squads. All our squads retain some form of skills and stroke development in them and this usually takes place in the first half of the session. The latter part of the program is then conditioning type work focusing on building aerobic capacity without infringing on stroke. We always keep some fast sprint work in during summer to assist swimmers in being competitive in their school level galas. The majority of this group are competitive swimmers with level 2 qualifying times or above. Swimmers are encouraged to swim 3 – 5 times per week depending on their age and where we are in the season.
Junior Elite & Senior Elite Squad – Swimmers in this group are predominantly aged 12 – 18 years of age. Many of them are level 3 and youth national qualifiers and our USA based older athletes return each winter to rejoin the team while on break from University. The group trains Monday to Thursday as well as a Saturday. Additional morning sessions are added into the weekly training regime. Training load is very individualized and dependent on age and experience but all athletes are encouraged to train a minimum of 4 times per week. Furthermore, we provide an on-site strength and conditioning program run by Jason Donnison training at the CURRO Hillcrest High gym. This is an additional service and must be booked into by contacting the club office. Swimmers in this squad can look forward to a wide range of training zones being targeted in a structured and panned format throughout the season. Even the most advanced swimmers can expect skill and stroke work to remain in their training throughout the season. This squad is based at CURRO high school at our Olympic size pool.
